With many Brits watching the pound this year, especially when it comes to holidays, all inclusive holidays have become much more popular and Mexico is currently one of the top destinations for this type of break.

Holidays to Mexico have increased in the past few months, reflecting the growing trend of the all inclusive holiday and also the favourable exchange rate for the pound.  It’s thought this trend for all inclusive comes from a desire to be able to budget ahead and not have extra costs added to the holiday cost whilst in-resort for many holidaymakers.

Cancun offers relaxing holidays where you can completely unwind on the sandy beaches and visit some of the most breathtaking ancient sites in the world. There are also lots of watersports available at the beaches.

Due to its position, the weather in Cancun is generally sunny, but as theChichen-itza resort is built verging on the Gulf of Mexico the heat is not overbearing.

Review supplied by our reader Martha Long

“The Royal Cancun really lived up to our expectations. There wasn’t anything we could moan about, except having to come home!
The hotel was worthy of its 5 stars, it was always spotless, including the pool area, loved the swimup pool bar. Staff made us feel important, nothing was too much for them and the room maids did an excellent job cleaning our room everyday.
Don’t know what to say about the food apart from it was absolutely delicious, responsible for me and my hubby putting on several pounds, just couldn’t resist it.
There was plenty of activities to take part in all day, we particularly enjoyed the beach games, there was even a waiter service on the beach!
The icing on the cake for us was that there were no children as the hotel is adults only, our first holiday, which we booked as our last minute holidays, on our own since the kids have grown up…..loved it…..can’t wait to do it again.”

Cancun

Cancun

Cancun is on the northeast shores of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. Its hotel zone is 6 miles northeast of the airport and Downtown Cancun is 9 miles northeast of the airport.

Overlooking the Caribbean Sea, Cancun’s hotel zone is a narrow, flat strip of asphalt and sand between the coastline and mangrove lagoons.

Its location on the Caribbean Sea means Cancun is a year-round destination, though temperatures can soar from May into September, and hurricane season is June to November.

Cancun was completely reborn after Hurricane Wilma decimated the tourism zone in October 2005. The storm toppled high-rise hotels along the waterfront and wiped out Cancun’s famed white sand beaches. However it didn’t take long for Mexico’s most lucrative destination to recover. The sand was replenished but isn’t as soft and dazzling white as in the past. Hotels and restaurants reappeared with more modern amenities and décor, emphasising sophistication over tequila-fuelled revelry, although there are still plenty of all-inclusive hotels catering to families and singles seeking an inexpensive seaside holiday.

Aquarium at La Isla

Aquarium at La Isla

Cancun is an excellent family destination with long stretches of calm water, lifeguards at most beaches and organised children’s activities at many hotels. The dolphins, sharks and tanks filled with tropical fish at the Interactive Aquarium at La Isla offer great fun for all of the family.

There are lots of franchise restaurants here, but there are also Thai, Italian, Argentinean, and Japanese restaurants with slick décor and excellent cuisine but prices can be high. For cheaper, more authentic Mexican fare visit the taco stands downtown.

Shopping malls offering similar souvenirs, sportswear and brand-name shops line the hotel zone. Luxury Avenue specialises in the high-end jewellery and designer clothing. La Isla has gondola rides in canals flowing around clusters of shops and restaurants. In downtown Mercado 28 there is an open-air market selling souvenir-quality jewellery, pottery and handicrafts. Supermarkets have the best prices on alcohol, cigarettes and Mexican coffee and vanilla.

Coco Bongo

Coco Bongo

Cancun’s nightlife scene revolves around enormous dance clubs, which sell cheap drinks alongside flashy entertainment. Several popular spots including the Coco Bongo, The City (nine bars and dancing on three floors), and Señor Frog’s (especially big with the under-30 crowd) are located at or near Forum by the Sea. There is also the Maxim pool bar and the upscale Lobby Bar at the Ritz-Carlton for the more sophisticated reveller.

The coastline between Cancún and Tulum, dubbed the Riviera Maya, is

Riviera Maya

Riviera Maya

packed with wonderful coves and beaches, action-packed theme parks and archaeological sites. Xcaret, 44 miles south of Cancun, is an ecological theme park that’s like a microcosm of all things Mexican. The top-notch nightly folkloric dance show is a must-see.
